ATELIER at THE FINE ARTS INSTITUTE OF EDMOND

We are coming up on the end of the 16 week Atelier I've been teaching at the Fine Arts Institute of Edmond.  In my opinion, the course has been very successful.  All of the artists in the class have drawn and painted incredibly well.  I am so impressed and of course, proud.  I've been keeping a blog for the Atelier to show the progression of the student work, www.faiclassicalatelier.blogspot.com  Beginning in June, I'll offer an Atelier for beginning students (on Tuesday evenings) and an Atelier for the students who have been studying with me for the last 16 weeks (this one will be on Saturdays).  Artists who have taken my drawing classes or who have some knowledge of drawing and painting are welcome in the advanced course.  Below is a description of the advanced Atelier.  I'll post more information about the beginning Atelier soon.

"Misty", Leslie Lienau, Graphite on Paper

THE FIGURE
In the next 16 week course we will study drawing and painting the human form in the academic tradition of the classical atelier.  Drawing and painting the figure will be emphasized and will be studied extensively.  We will spend the first 8 weeks of the 16 week course drawing the human form, practicing the step-by-step "block-in" process of accurately translating size, proportion, line and turning form with light and shade.  We will study from the live model, doing quick gestural studies to long pose complete drawings.  In the second 8 weeks we will transition to painting the human figure.  Drawing on our extensive knowledge of using dry media, we will study value using grisaille and alla prima poster studies.  The practice of color mixing will be strongly emphasized through alla prima color poster studies along with the final form painting method.  I will lecture and demonstrate and work closely with you, using constructive critique and encouragement to help you translate with accuracy. Homework will be strongly suggested and will aid in your personal training discipline.
[This class will  be held at my home studio or at another location,  as the study of the nude figure will be necessary for this phase of the classical study.]

Saturdays:  9:00 – 12:00 or 2:00 – 5:00
Limited to 8 students per class.
June 5 – October 2
NO CLASS ON July 3 or August 14
Tuition:  $589 (includes model fee)
Registration through the Fine Arts Institute begins April 26.

WAVE

"Fading Into Sky"
Leslie Lienau
Oil on Linen, 5X7, 2010
I just finished this oil sketch.  It's a study for a larger painting I plan to start this week. This is painted from photo reference I took in Montauk, New York a few years ago.  I remember it was evening and there was fog on the horizon, so it was very hard to see it.  The water faded into the sky.

PORTRAIT OF ALEENE

I've been working on this oil portrait of a woman called Aleene Koontz.  She is a Cherokee Elder from Choctaw, Oklahoma.  She's been sitting for my Portrait Drawing class at the Fine Arts Institute for the last 5 weeks.  The students in the class have been drawing, but I decided to demonstrate the process of painting, starting with a refined drawing on the canvas and the subsequent development of the painting into the underpainting, which is what this photo illustrates. The bit of paint in the middle between the eyes is the beginning of the form painting, which is the final phase.  I'll post my progress as I continue to work it out. (The unfinished bit in the lower right corner is not intentionally left undone - I do plan to finish that part when Aleene sits for me again!)

Roger Lawrence, a student in my class provided the photographs in this post.  Aleene is posing and I am demonstrating.  Aleene is a delightful individual and a terrific model.  And she is BEAUTIFUL!  Thanks for the photos Roger!
